How Does Surge Protection Work?

Power surges can occur at any moment. They arise from several causes such as faulty equipment, storms, intense fluctuations in voltage on a circuit or provide deficiencies in your electricity company. Because of increased sophistication in electronic wiring, the slightest burst in power may lead to substantial ruin to electrical components causing permanent damage.

Although lightning is most commonly associated with electricity surges, in fact just 2 percent of power surges are caused by lightning strikes. The root of power surges are likely as a result of interruption in the power flow which is later restarted, or when something causes electricity to flow back into the system, for example, a lightning strike. The functioning of a surge protector

The live cable or primary power line at a surge protector includes an additional linked connection that feeds to an earth cable. A ground cable’s purpose would be to direct any extra current safely into the ground. The surge connection from the protector stays inactive until a larger than normal voltage seems. This excess current is then safely diverted through the excess earth wire, directly into the ground. This prevents more current than normal from flowing into your appliances effectively making sure that they are protected from any injury which can be caused by power surges.
